In the rural landscape of Ibiza, we are faced with the challenge of recovering the essence of a traditional payesa farmhouse, restoring the architectural coherence and the historical dialogue between the house, its auxiliary buildings and the surrounding territory.
The house follows the canonical layout of Ibiza rural architecture, with the kitchen facing west and the upper house (casa de dalt) facing east. The presence of an attached sequer built over a porch creates a distinctive L-shaped configuration, an uncommon variation that gives the ensemble a particular architectural value.
Around the main house lies a constellation of buildings historically linked to agricultural life: former storage spaces, animal shelters, the safareig, the cistern and the well. Each of these elements responds to a functional and territorial logic, forming a system in which architecture, water and landscape maintain an inseparable relationship. The position of the cistern, located at a higher level to distribute water by gravity to the house, reflects the constructive intelligence with which the territory was traditionally inhabited.
The intervention is based on respect for this original organisation. Rather than introducing new elements, the project seeks to recover the unified reading of the ensemble by removing those later additions that, detached from the logic of the farmhouse, have altered its volumes and architectural identity.
The same approach guides the intervention inside the house. Additions that had gradually blurred the original architectural order are removed, recovering spatial clarity and highlighting the characteristic elements of payesa architecture. The reorganisation of the rooms responds to contemporary ways of living, incorporating new uses and higher levels of comfort while preserving the identity and authenticity of the construction.
Restoring the ensemble means returning prominence to traditional architecture, allowing each building to recover its role within the landscape and enabling the farmhouse to once again express the serenity, balance and authenticity with which it was conceived.
