HOUSE IN EL TERRENO

PALMA MALLORCA

The renovation was approached as an act of healing for a “sick” house, where the interior spaces had become compromised by a lack of natural light and ventilation.

While respecting the character of the neighbourhood, the external volume of the building was left largely untouched, and the intervention focused on bringing visual order to the façades.

Inside, the spaces are opened in all three dimensions. Partition walls are removed to create larger, more fluid rooms, and part of the existing slab is taken away to extend the spatial height, allowing light to enter at different levels and creating a play of light and shadow throughout the day.

The existing courtyard was originally located at basement level, which conditioned access from the ground floor (living, dining, and kitchen) through a long, narrow staircase, and created the sensation of being in a sunken void with no visual connection to the sea. In order to reconnect the interior with the exterior and restore a close relationship between both, the terrain was reconfigured to its original levels, creating terraces at different heights. In this way, the living and dining area extends towards the first terrace, the highest level of the garden, where an outdoor dining area and barbecue space are located. The swimming pool and sunbathing area are placed on a second, lower terrace. From both levels, open views are gained over Palma Bay, the Cathedral, and the infinite horizon of the sea.
